I’m Jill, a BACP registered counsellor working in Dunbar and Berwick-upon-Tweed.&#38;nbsp;

I am trauma-informed, somatic-led and a Wild Therapist.&#38;nbsp;

I support women who are fed up feeling frustrated, stuck, and held back from living the life that they truly want to live.

	Counselling

My practice uses an Cognitive Behaviouralist Therapy (CBT) approach: &#38;nbsp;I will help you gain insight into the thoughts, behaviours, emotions and experiences that might unconsciously impact how you live your life and help you to develop a compassionate understanding of why you have developed certain ways of being along with tools to help you to make changes. 

I also work with the body, using a somatic approach; developing a personal sense of how things feel in your body and for your nervous system, which can support with difficulties our thinking minds can’t always access. My work is always trauma-informed and compassion is always at the centre of my practice. 
I seek to provide a trusting and meaningful relationship, creating a safe and gentle space which is yours. I believe in the power of healing and growth which the therapeutic relationship can provide; in not judging, criticising or offering advice but instead through allowing space to feel heard and to express and acknowledge the feelings and difficulties life can bring. The theraputic relationship provides a secure base, where we can learn different ways of being relationally and build safety within ourselves, which can be transferred onto relationships in the outside world. My practice is collaborative, working at your pace and towards your goals.
Improvements you can expect to see through counselling include: 
Increased self-awareness - understanding patterns of thoughts, behaviours, emotions and beliefs and impact these have.Building self-acceptance - developing a kinder way of being towards yourself, learning to be more compassionate and less self-critical.Improve emotional regulation - building mind-body connection, identifying and understanding our emotions and what they are trying to communicate with us.Building resilience - being able to move in and out of states of anxiety/depression etc. more easily and not getting stuck in fixed patterns. Improve communication - adding boundaries and fostering healthier relationships with those around you, enabling you to connect more deeply and authentically. Empowerment - &#38;nbsp;finding agency and purpose to make choices which are authentic to you.

I have always been fascinated by how as humans we make meaning, how we experience life, and how we come to understand ourselves. I studied Psychology at university and worked therapeutically in both the NHS and in a range of other mental health settings afterwards. Through this work, I deepened my values and passions of a more holistic way of living-well and found myself wanting to work more with the causes of our difficulties. 


Following a personal period of loss, I trained as a counsellor and also began my own therapeutic journey; for me this changed everything and allowed me to really meet myself and to change the relationship I had with who I am.


After graduating from counselling I worked as a group work therapist and also in private practice. I love counselling and feel so privileged to be able to work alongside clients. For me, the power of counselling lies in that it allows us to develop a deeper awareness of ourselves - of our beliefs we hold, often subconsciously, and of our body-felt sense of the world - allowing us to attend, nourish and challenge ourselves - to learn to trust and extend ourselves whilst feeling more rooted in our lives.


I have always felt most liberated and most myself when I’m outside; I think food tastes better outside, conversations flow more easily and emotional tangles feel less constrictive. I feel a sense of belonging in being in relation and in interacting with all the magic the more-than-human holds. But, most importantly like many, know that we urgently need to grow a more reciprocal relationship with the more-than-human.


I have recently completed Nick Totton’s Wild Therapy which is the weaving of two true and passionate parts of me, parts that I’ve always known I had to join. I have lots of dreams, ideas and plans mixings and swirling together for where to take this so please keep an eye out this summer!

	Beginning Counselling


I firstly offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation, this is a chance for you to tell me why you're interested in counselling along with what your hopes are. I can answer any questions you may have and check if i'm the right counsellor to meet your needs. 

Should you decide to go ahead, we will book an initial appointment, where I will spend some time finding out more about you, your current situation and the impact it's having on your life.

Counselling is not a ‘quick fix’, it not just about working with the symptoms but it’s going to the root of the problem. Oftentimes, this can make us feel worse before we start feeling better again but this is also the place where real change can occur.&#38;nbsp;

Where I work


I work face to face from my therapy room in Dunbar. The room provides a comfortable and peaceful space, overlooking my garden then onto fields beyond. I also work from Babyama Wellness Hub in Berwick-upon-Tweed on a Friday.&#38;nbsp;

If it’s more convienent to save travel, I’m able to work online via zoom.

Wild Therapy is so many things; It’s an exploration of our relationship between wild and domesticity through embodiment, playfulness and a heart-felt sense of living.


It’s a remembering of the connection we innately have with the natural world; we are all as beings not separated from but enmeshed and entangled together, we weave together as part of a wide connected and dancing ecosystem that cycles in life. And if this is true of life, it feels congruent that it also true in the therapeutic process.
 
It’s coming into ‘being’ with ourselves and our land, tuning into the whispers underneath all the clatter. The deeper we listen, the more we untangle ourselves, yet the more we are aware and the more expansive we can be. It’s a reorganising of our being and a reconnecting to the wild currents that flow through us.


Wild Therapy practices deep listening and attentiveness; it’s a portal between our internal and our external landscape. It asks us to sink into these landscapes and tune in to what the plants, the trees, the rivers, the sky, and the rocks have to say. This in turn, can help explore and reflect on any thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise within us in response and deepening our awareness. 


It can be muddy and messy and murky. It can ask to decompose old stories and plant seeds for change. But like the wild is ultimately about expression, reciprocity, intimacy, fluidity, and generosity. 


Supporting us to feel more integrated and rooted in the world.

Erich Fromm once wrote:


“The soil, the plants, the animals are still man’s world, and the more the human race emerges from these primary bonds, the more it separates itself from the natural world, the more intense becomes the need to find new ways of escaping separateness.” In our separation, we often fill the gap with artificial stimuli that hijack our attention and dopamine reward systems — yet leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled.
